Two crises. One community.
Every year, Malawi generates an estimated 700,000 metric tonnes of cassava peel waste. It is burned, dumped, and left to rot in landfills — emitting toxic gases.
At the same time, SMEs and market traders have no access to affordable, locally made sustainable packaging. Malawi's plastic ban created a legal obligation without creating an alternative. So vendors continue using plastic — not from indifference, but from economic reality.

Meet MAKOKO™
MAKOKO is the Chichewa word for cassava peels. It is also the name of the packaging we make from them.
Avore Technologies collects cassava peel waste from farmers and processes it into biocomposite sheets — which we manufacture into kraft paper bags sold directly to SMEs and market traders.
What farmers discard, we recover. What pollutes, we transform. The waste was always here. We simply refused to walk past it.
